L'Oreal Preference Wild Ombres on Dark Hair (Ombre No.1 & Ombre No.2)

If you have been reading my past hair blog posts, you would have noticed that I like to dye my hair by myself. I like experimenting on my hair, so my hair has gone through some trials and errors, but the errors were manageable and I still ended up liking the errors.
Anyway, today, I will be reviewing L'Oreal's Preference Wild Ombres. This is not the first time I've used this product. The first time I used the product was with this Ombre No. 2 (For Dark Blonde to Medium Brown Hair):
But guess what? The results were the same as Ombre No. 3 (For Light Blonde to Blonde Hair), so let's just consider this review applicable for both shades.
For this review, I used Ombre No. 3:
What's inside the box?
- Instructions
- Special Ombre Brush
- Activating Powder
- Developer Creme
- Lightening Creme
- Conditioning Shampoo
- Gloves
So in terms of applying, the instructions on the paper and the tips given through L'Oreal's online ad were different. I followed the one in L'Oreal's online ad, wherein you start from the ends of your hair, using the brush horizontally fully loaded with the product, then as you head on towards your chin or ear, use the brush vertically with lesser product to make a gradient effect.
I left it in for 45 minutes, but make sure that you check your hair in-between, to see if you think that the shade is already enough.

I like the result. The brown shade gradually lightened to a blonde shade. But it did make my hair more yellow than what the box has shown. This is similar to the results I got from Ombre No. 2, but that one was a bit yellow orange in shade.
Now, for dark haired people like me, it's an expected result. Any blonde dyes used on a dark hair that is unbleached, would turn your hair into a brassy or yellowish shade, unless you totally bleach your hair to the lightest of course!
So what did I do to make my hair less yellow? I toned it afterwards. On my next blog post, I will teach you how to tone your hair!!!
Anyway, here is a summary of my experience with this ombre kit from L'Oreal!
- Easy to apply with the included ombre brush.
- The effect is definitely noticeable.
- Ombre remains for a long time.
- Cheaper than going to the salon (but obviously at your own risk)
CONS:
- Bleach is bleach. The smell is very, very, very strong.
- Dries your hair out.
- May cause brassy effect to dark hair (which can be repaired by toning).
PRICE in Australia: $14.00
Will I continue to use this product? YES! I still like the effect it did, whether it was too yellow or too orange. Sometimes, I like its effect, especially during summer days. But since it's winter here in Australia, I will be toning my hair to keep it ashy for the season! :)
